Rail Freight: Stability and Cost Efficiency for Large Volumes

Rail freight is an efficient solution for transporting heavy and bulk cargo over long distances. It offers reliable delivery times, high load capacity, and less dependency on weather or road conditions.

This method is especially cost-effective for transporting metal products, construction materials, chemicals, grain, timber, and machinery. For large volumes, rail remains the most economical option in terms of cost per ton.

Trains also provide reliability: railcars are sealed, routes are monitored, and the infrastructure allows deliveries to even remote regions. If needed, multimodal transport can be arranged with final delivery by truck.

Rail freight is suitable for both domestic and international shipments, including routes to China, Kazakhstan, and EU countries. The company offers a full range of services — from document processing to cargo tracking.

Truckload demand dips heading into holiday season

National Spot Rates: Van, Flatbed, Reefer

Ratios fall with signs of prices plateauing

Nov 9 – 15 – With holiday retail freight in place and consumer packaged goods now sitting in warehouses for online shoppers, truckload demand on the spot market has declined. That’s pushed load-to-truck ratios lower, but localized capacity constraint continues to keep pressure on pricing.

Load-to-truck ratios rise to close month

Oct 26 – Nov 1 – The monthly national average for van rates hit an all-time high in October, topping the previous record that was set in September, as disrupted supply chains see more and more freight moved on the spot market. Load-to-truck ratios rose at month’s end after falling in recent weeks.

Rates begin to flatten as truckload demand edges downward

Oct 12 – 18 – Load-to-truck ratios fell for the second week in a row, a signal that truckload capacity has loosened. Truckload rates remain high due to imbalanced networks and tight capacity on specific lanes and markets.

National van rate sets all-time high in September

National Spot Rates: Van, Flatbed, Reefer

Q3 closes with a rush of spot market shipments

Sept 28 – Oct 4 – The national average for van rates set a new record high, hitting $2.38 in September – 6 cents higher than the previous record set in June 2018. Shippers have relied more and more on the spot market, with disruptions from the pandemic push freight away from the contract market, and capacity tightened last week with the rush to move freight ahead of the close of Q3.

Seasonal increase in demand offers relief for carriers

May 11 – 17 – Spot market metrics continued their upward trend last week, with ratios on the DAT One network climbing in response to seasonal demand. As some states attempt to return to normal life and produce enters supply chains, the increased demand brings some relief for carriers that have struggled with low rates during the COVID-19 crisis.

Produce season puts pressure on pricing

May 4 – 10 – For the first time since late March, rates rose on most high-traffic lanes last week. Load posts on the DAT One network also continued to climb, with businesses reopening in some states and produce season increasing the demand for truckload shipments. Prices and load-to-truck ratios remain low, but freight markets appear to have turned the corner.

Truckload spot rates and volumes head for the bottom

Downward trend has not flattened out yet

Apr. 13 – 19 – There’s not much good news for truckers this week. Spot rates continue to fall for vans, reefers, and flatbeds, and declining load-to-truck ratios signal that a rebound is not happening just yet. The weak freight market reflects the economic malaise due to coronavirus-related shutdowns and historically low oil prices.

Truckload spot rates drop, as demand falls abruptly

Retail freight loses urgency as shoppers stay home

Mar 30 – Apr 5 – Van rates fell last week, following a sharp decline in load-to-truck ratios. Consumers stayed home, making it less urgent to re-stock grocery store shelves. At the same time, businesses deemed “non-essential” slowed or stopped freight shipments, reducing demand.

Mar 16 – 22 – Urgent orders of retail goods continue to drive spot rates up for van and reefer equipment. Anxious shoppers buy as much as they can on each trip. Retailers, including e-commerce outlets, rely increasingly on spot market providers to re-stock shelves at a moment’s notice, while truckers report long wait times at pickup and delivery points.

July on pace to beat May numbers

July 22 – 28 – As expected, spot market rates have dipped this month, but volumes and pricing for July are still on track to beat May’s numbers. Van rates were mostly stable last week, with upticks in load counts out of key markets like Los Angeles, while volumes out of California also gave reefers a lift. Flatbed rates peaked early in July.

Spot rates take summertime slide

National Spot Rates: Van, Flatbed, Reefer

Post-holiday prices drop for truckload freight

Jul 8 – 14 – There was a significant uptick in spot market activity last week, with a full workforce returning after a break for Fourth of July. But with the holiday in the rear-view mirror, there’s also less urgency for truckload shipments. That led to declining van, reefer, and flatbed rates in many parts of the country.

Q2 ends on a strong note

National Spot Rates: Van, Flatbed, Reefer

Capacity tightens in last week of June

Jun 24 – 30 – The end of the second quarter brought higher truckload demand last week. The increased load-to-truck ratio pushed prices higher, with the national averages for van and reefer rates hitting their highest marks since January. The June averages for each were 10¢ higher than in May, while June’s national flatbed rate was 3¢ higher than the May average.

Capacity rebounds after Road check

National Spot Rates: Van, Flatbed, Reefer

Ratios fall but national rates hold steady

Jun 10 – 16 – Trucks returned to the highways last week after the annual Roadcheck inspection blitz put a squeeze on capacity in the previous week. That pushed load-to-truck ratios lower for each trailer type, and many lanes that saw major rate increases during Roadcheck had declines last week. Still, national average rates for vans and reefers remain the highest they’ve been since January.

Van and reefer rates get summertime boost

May 20 – 26 – Summer is here unofficially, and the truckload spot market finally started to heat up last week. Load-to-truck ratios rose for van and reefer freight heading into Memorial Day weekend, which contributed to higher rates on many major lanes. Meanwhile, flatbed demand continued to soften.

Spot freight rates stuck in neutral

Truck availability keeps pressure off prices

April 1 – 7 – Spot market capacity continued to outpace truckload demand last week, as evidenced by falling load-to-truck ratios for each trailer type. Freight volumes actually rose, compared to a year ago, but the availability of trucks has kept the monthly national average rates for vans and reefers mostly in neutral. Flatbed rates have climbed in April.

Mar 18 – 24 – The bomb cyclone rerouted supply chains two weeks ago, and flooding continues in the Midwest. Rates continue their seasonal slide
Flatbed demand picks up steam

Feb 3 – 9 – Rates continued their seasonal decline last week, even though January and February freight volumes are running higher than the past three years. National average rates were down for vans, reefers and flatbeds. National load-to-truck ratios fell for vans and reefers last week, but ticked up for flatbeds, as temperatures improved following the polar vortex.

Van, reefer, flatbed prices decline

Jan 6 – 12 – After two holiday weeks, truckload capacity came back strong last week, which knocked down national average rates for dry van, reefers and flatbeds. Freight moves now are less urgent, and the e-commerce and retail holiday season is over. Falling fuel surcharges are also contributing to the decline in rates.

Christmas capacity crunch raises rates
Holiday vacations affect truck availability

Dec 23 – 29 – Less freight moved last week, as businesses shut down for Christmas. But for the loads that did need to move, freight brokers and shippers had a hard time finding trucks, as evidenced by the soaring load-to-truck ratios. That capacity crunch pushed rates higher for dry van, refrigerated and flatbed freight.

December demand disappoints
Rates dip for vans, reefers, flatbeds

Dec 9 – 15 – In recent years, spot market rates have spiked in December, but that hasn’t happened in 2018. In fact, the national van rate dipped a few cents to $2.08 per mile, matching the average rates for both November and October. The national reefer and flatbed rates also declined. The load-to-truck ratio—a measurement of demand versus capacity—dipped for vans and flatbeds and was unchanged for reefers.

Holiday freight pushes demand and rates higher

Van and reefer rates gain 1¢

Nov 25 – Dec 1 – Demand for vans was exceptionally strong last week, especially in lanes associated with retail and e-commerce freight. Both the national average van rate and reefer rate increased 1¢ per mile, while the national flatbed rate held steady, halting an 8-week decline. Load-to-truck ratios increased for all three equipment types and demand is expected to remain strong through the holidays.

Thanksgiving rush boosts reefer rates

Capacity tightens ahead of retail season

Nov 11 -17 – Reefer rates bumped up again last week, as grocery shelves were stocked ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. The national average reefer rate added 2¢ and the reefer load-to-truck ratio increased 7%. Van rates lost 1¢, but demand is building, as the van load-to-truck ratio jumped 12%. Meanwhile, flatbed prices continue their seasonal decline.

Spot market gears up for the holidays

Tighter capacity puts pressure on prices

Oct 28 – Nov 3 – The West Coast continued to drive spot market demand, pushing load-to-truck ratios higher for vans and reefers. That slowed the decline in the national van rate, which fell 1¢ due to lower fuel costs. The national averages for reefer and flatbed rates also continued to drift. But with the tighter capacity and the holiday season right around the corner, we could see prices move up soon.

Van rates hit lowest point of the year

Extra capacity leads to cooler freight markets

Oct 14 – 20 – Freight movements stalled two weeks ago when Hurricane Michael wreaked havoc on the Southeast, and volumes have yet to rebound. As a result,  load-to-truck ratios for each equipment type are the lowest they’ve been all year. An increase in available capacity also pushed national average rates lower for vans, flatbeds and reefers, with dry van rates also hitting their lowest point so far this year.

Spot market demand slows after Q3 close

Van rates rebound from late-summer slide

Sep 30 – Oct 6 – Spot market demand cooled down in the first week of October when compared to the end of September, when shippers were trying to move freight before the close of Q3. That contributed to looser capacity, as shown by the lower load-to-truck ratios, but the national average van rate rose 2¢ compared to the September average. The national flatbed rate fell 3¢, while the average reefer rate held steady.
